Low fps using RectAreaLight

Description of the problem

Hi guys, I am building a scify scene where I am using RectAreaLights to simulate strip lights (you can see the RectAreaLightHelpers in the image).

I have noticed a very low fps performance when using these type of lights (no more than 20-30 fps). If I use any other type of light such as SpotLight or PointLight I get 60 fps steady.

Is this the expected behavior or maybe am I doing something wrong? How can I improve fps using these type of lights?

  1. These are more expensive than other light types, yes. I would not suggest using four of them in a scene like this. There are techniques to approximate the same visual effect without these lights, but please use stack overflow or the forum (http://discourse.threejs.org/) for help with that.
